From Riviera Shores to Torino’s Culinary Heart
Our journey from the sun-drenched shores of the French Riviera, through the dramatic and rolling hills of Monaco at sunset, to the majestic snow-capped Alps was punctuated by an unforgettable detour through Torino. This city, a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, serves as a gateway to the beauty of Northern Italy. A mere three hours from the Riviera and Nice Airport, Torino, with its striking tunnels and rugged landscapes of the Ligurian Peninsula, provided a relaxing midpoint for our Friday after-work departure.
While Scannabue and Madame Piola are excellent culinary stops, it was the vibrant heart of Mercato Centrale Torino that truly defined our adventure. Amidst the bustle of Europe’s largest outdoor market, the vivid hues and rustic flavors of the region came alive. From the unique CastelFranco salad, with its striking green and purple leaves, to the eye-catching lavender-colored cauliflower, the market showcased a bounty of local treasures. Merchants offered fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and homemade pasta, creating a sensory feast that encapsulates the essence of Italian cuisine.
Raffaele D’Errico’s Bakery – A Culinary Gem
The soul of our market experience unfolded in the warm confines of Raffaele D’Errico’s bakery, nestled within the central structure of Mercato Centrale. Here, every loaf of bread tells a story of tradition and passion. Raffaele’s use of sourdough techniques produces bread that is crusty, flavorful, and rich with rustic character. His focaccia marinara and eggplant parmesan are nothing short of culinary masterpieces.
Among his creations, a small round sourdough loaf evoked memories of San Francisco, blending the familiar with the distinctly Italian. Raffaele’s dedication to his craft and commitment to perfection shine through in every bite, offering a taste of Piemonte’s finest baking traditions.
From Torino to the Alpine Elegance of Courchevel
For anyone visiting Torino, a stop at Mercato Centrale is essential—not just for its vibrant produce but for the exceptional bread and focaccia crafted by Raffaele D’Errico. This market connects visitors to the heart of Italian culinary heritage, offering flavors and memories that linger long after the journey continues.
And continue it did. Our route wound through the scenic Col de Frejus, past Albertville—home of the 1992 Winter Olympics—and into the Savoyard Alpine Valley. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the full “Snow Moon” rose, casting a magical glow over the snow-laden mountains. The natural beauty of the Alps was a fitting prelude to the luxury of Courchevel Village, where a seamless check-in to our 3-bedroom, 3.5-bath penthouse awaited. With a bottle of champagne and a panoramic view of the Alpine peaks under the moonlight, we toasted to the skiing adventures and luxury real estate opportunities that lay ahead.
